Event detection capabilities of IEEE 802.15.4 Multi-Sink Wireless Sensor Networks

Multi-sink wireless sensor networks are recently gaining interest. They have been introduced to overcome the scalability problem arising in single sink network architectures: by increasing the number of sensor nodes, the information collected at a single sink might become excessive with respect to its communication capacity. In this paper, the topologies formed by means of the IEEE 802.15.4 association procedure, i.e., trees rooted at sink nodes, are analyzed in terms of event detection capabilities. Specific attention is dedicated to the characterization of network lifetime and event notification reliability for different sinks distribution and varying the range of the event detection. Multi-sink topology performance are compared with classic single sink topology.
